A General Power of Attorney (GPA) enables you to pass authority for someone else to sign in your absence as though they were you.

It is usually a temporary arrangement, designed either for convenience or due to absence.

A General Power of Attorney can only be used whilst you have mental capacity and usually has a time or event limit.
